Chapter Fourteen
“What do we know about the Badarians?” Ashlynn asked her chief adviser.
“They are a hearty people,” answered Tasarin as they walked. “Like our own Nagin tribes, they live off the earth; they hunt only for meat and pelts for clothing. The richer of them enjoy expensive jewels.”
“Do they live longer than humans?”
“I have never heard they have, though I cannot say I have ever heard anything about their lifespans at all.”
“You are a well of information, Tasarin.”
They were greeted at the mouth of the dungeon by a guard who quickly moved aside upon seeing who was coming. Ashlynn walked with clear purpose down the long corridor that split to the left and right. To Tasarin's credit, most of the cells were empty. The few that were occupied received not so much as a passing glance from Ashlynn as she made her way to the cell farthest back on the left. It was from this cell that she could hear the deep rumbling voice of Cavalon as he conversed with a guard. As soon as their footsteps were heard the guard stood at attention. Ashlynn glanced in at Cavalon before looking sternly at the man in her employ.
“What is your name?” His face was unfamiliar to her. “How long have you been working this station?”
“Treval, Your Majesty. This is my fourth week training as a guard. Two days will make a month.”
“How terrible it is that you shall not see that month,” Ashlynn replied without pity. “You are not given wages to speak with those in detention. Having been here for more than four minutes should have taught you that, never mind four weeks.”
“But he said...”
“I care very little about what he said,” she interrupted. “Is it he whose castle you are supposed to guard?”
“No, Your Majesty.”
“And is he, being behind metal bars, a person of quality whose statements and opinions can be trusted over a direct order from myself?”
“N...no, Your Majesty.”
Ashlynn smiled deceptively. “And it is for those correct answers that you will receive my mercy. No longer are you to work at this station, do you understand? If you wish to remain in the employ of this castle, you will report immediately to the stables. If you manage to do your work correctly there, we may reassess the situation after a time.” With nothing else to say, she simply stared at the man until he realized he was free to go. Before he was even gone, Cavalon was chuckling.
“You made that poor kid wet himself. Does urine rust metal armor?” His golden eyes lifted to Ashlynn's face as she turned to look at him sitting on the cell floor. “I'm not too proud to admit that I didn't think you a woman that had the spine to be a leader.”
“And are you too proud to admit you were wrong?”
“Not at all.” Standing, Cavalon wrapped his enormous hands around the iron bars, towering over Ashlynn.
Ashlynn folded her hands together as she peered up into his face. “What did you tell him?”
Cavalon shrugged.
